What types of seeds are there?
Organic seeds, hybrid seeds, non-GMO seeds and heirloom seeds. There are many different ones, but what types of seeds are there? Here we explain to you the types of seeds, and common terms, so you can make a good choice!
Organic seeds
Organic seeds are harvested from certified organic crops. The seeds can be hybrid or heirloom. Organic farmers must seek organic seed to qualify for certification as “organic. They must also meet certain conditions.
The advantage of organic seeds is that they are untreated with chemicals and therefore retain their structural integrity better. This is not only better for the environment, but also for the resulting crops.
Heirloom seeds
A heirloom species is a cultivar that was widely grown in earlier periods of human history, but is not used in modern large-scale agriculture. Many heirloom vegetables have retained their characteristics through open pollination. Heirloom seeds are considered passed down from earlier generations of plants that have been cultivated for their positive characteristics.
These species are often harder to find because they are thus not widely cultivated. the advantage is that they often have a unique flavor compared to non-heirloom vegetables.
Open pollinated seeds
Open pollination is pollination by insects, birds, wind or other natural mechanisms. The seeds of pollinated plants will produce new generations of those plants. Breeding, which is widely done in agriculture, is uncontrolled and the source of pollen (male parent) is unknown. Open pollination, on the other hand, can result in plants that vary widely in genetic traits, thus increasing biodiversity.
Hybrid seeds
Hybrid seed is produced by manually cross-pollinated plants. Hybrids are grown to improve the characteristics of the resulting plants, such as better yield, greater uniformity, improved color, disease resistance, and so on. Hybrid seed cannot be saved because the seed of the first generation of hybrid plants does not produce reliable copies. Therefore, new seed must be purchased for each planting. A hybrid seed does not mean that the seeds are genetically modified.
Seed Saving
Open pollination is the key to seed saving. Plants that reproduce naturally tend to adapt to local conditions over time. They evolve into reliable varieties that perform, especially in their local conditions.
Certain tomato varieties
Certain tomato varieties bear a full crop at once and do not grow taller than a certain height associated with the variety; they are often good choices for growing in pots. Certain tomato varieties are preferred by commercial growers who want to harvest an entire field at once, or home growers who don’t have too much space.
Undefined tomato varieties
Indeterminate tomato varieties develop into plants that grow indefinitely tall and continue to produce until stopped by frost. This is a favorite of organic gardeners who want ripe tomatoes all season long.
So there are different types of seeds you can use to start growing. In our Seed Market, you will find several Heirloom and hybrid varieties, all organic. Take advantage of it in the new breeding season!
