Sowing and growing Sugar Snaps

Want to sow Sugar Snaps but don’t know how? No worries! We explain. Sowing and growing Sugar Snaps is not difficult, you just need to know how.

Sugar Snaps seeding

Sugar snaps are delicious, fun to grow and help bind nitrogen in the soil, which is great for your vegetable garden. It helps them to have a trellis to support their growth, and like to grow in pots on your balcony, courtyard or other small space in your vegetable garden.

Sugar snaps enjoy full sun to partial shade and it usually takes between 60 and 70 days from sowing to harvest.

When to plant Sugar Snaps?

Sugar snaps grow best under cool, moist growing conditions. They prefer daytime temperatures of 15C to 18C with a maximum of 24 degrees and a minimum of 7 degrees. Temperatures above 30 degrees cause early maturity and lower yields.

Stems and leaves are rarely affected by frost, but damage can occur if a cold spell follows a period of warm weather.

Sugar Snaps thrive in a wide range of soil types, as long as the soil is well-drained and of good depth. The ideal pH range is 5.8 to 6.8.

In the Netherlands, sugarsnaps are usually planted in the months of February, March, April and May. They are considered one of the easiest vegetables to grow and are a delicious addition to your vegetable garden!

Tips for growing sugar snaps

Whenever possible, choose a sunny spot to sow your sugar snap seeds. While sugar snaps can grow in partial shade, they will be sweeter and more productive if grown in full sun. Sugar Snaps, also called Sugar Peas, prefer well-drained soil, so raised beds and pots work great on your balcony or in the vegetable garden.

Sugar Snaps seeding in brief

  1. Loosen the soil. Sugar Snaps like water-permeable soil.
  2. Sow the seeds about 2.5 centimeters deep and 5 centimeters apart.
  3. Water until the soil is moist and keep it consistently moist but not too wet. Sugar Snaps typically germinate within 7 to 10 days.
  4. Once the seedlings are about 10 inches of soil, you can thin them out by planting them about 15 inches apart.
  5. Grow the Sugar Snap with plenty of water and they will be ready to be harvested in about 10 to 12 weeks!
