It is not difficult to grow onions, you just need the right resources. Consider good soil and soil conditioners. For example, worm manure is an excellent tool to use.

Also be aware that different types of onions, have longer or shorter ripening times. Do you grow different types of onions? So give them their own spot or seedbed in your vegetable garden.

In addition, it is important that the soil the onion seeds are in is consistently moist. Keep it moist, but not too wet. Onions do not like dry and wet feet.

Below we give you step-by-step instructions on how best to grow onions.

Onion sowing and growing in brief

  1. Prepare the soil by loosening it and removing weeds.
  2. Sow onion seeds about 0.5 cm deep and at least 5 cm apart.
  3. Water the soil well so that the seeds, and later seedlings, can develop good roots.
  4. Keep the soil moist throughout growth.
  5. Give them good vegetable garden nutrition, such as ECOstyle’s Moestuin-AZ during growth.

Onions germinate at a temperature between 20 and 23 degrees. So a propagator to start indoors is not an unnecessary luxury.
