Sowing and growing eggplant

Sowing eggplants in your vegetable garden is an enjoyable activity and certainly not complicated. It requires only some prior knowledge and the right supplies. In addition to eggplant seeds, you will need a propagator, seed trays and other supplies. Once you have gathered these, the seeding of eggplant can begin. We will explain step by step how this works.

Eggplant: what is it?

The eggplant is a versatile vegetable, part of the nightshade family, characterized by its oval shape and shiny, deep purple skin. Inside you will find the juicy flesh rich in small, fine seeds. Eggplants are excellent in a variety of culinary styles, from grilling to baking, and are an essential ingredient in both Mediterranean and Asian dishes.

Below we describe the essential steps to successfully sow and grow eggplants in your vegetable garden.

Eggplant sowing in brief

  1. Start by filling your seed trays or pots with a suitable soil for eggplant. Proper watering is crucial, so make sure the soil is well moist before you plant the seeds.
  2. Spread the eggplant seeds evenly, about 0.5 cm apart.
  3. Cover the seeds with a fine layer of soil, compost or vermiculite.
  4. Place the trays in a propagator or cover them with plastic wrap in which you have poked small holes for ventilation.
  5. Keep the soil moist, but be careful not to get too wet to avoid disease in eggplants.
  6. Once the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are robust enough, repot each seedling into its own P9 pot.
  7. After the icing season, when there is no more chance of frost, the seedlings can be planted out in the greenhouse about 45 cm apart. Eggplants love sun, so pick a sunny spot.
  8. Eggplant seeds need a warm environment for germination temperature. A heated propagator or a spot on the windowsill over the heater are ideal.

Growing conditions for eggplant

For growing eggplants, it is important that the growing conditions are optimal. Growing eggplants indoors or in a greenhouse may require ensuring adequate heat and protection. Pollination of eggplant is an important aspect; indoor cultivation may require manual pollination. Proper planting spacing of eggplant and regular watering ensure healthy growth and development.

Care of eggplants

Care of eggplants includes regularly checking for diseases and providing proper nutrition and support. When it is time for eggplant harvesting, do so carefully so as not to damage the plants. With proper care and attention, eggplant plants can give a bountiful harvest, and you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Take care of your eggplant plants and they will reward you with an abundance of fresh eggplants to enjoy in your kitchen!
