Sowing and growing cauliflower

A vegetable commonly grown in the kitchen garden is cauliflower. Cauliflower can be sown early to mid-late, depending on the variety. Having your own in your vegetable garden is incredibly fun, but many people don’t know exactly how best to do it. We explain it to you below in a few simple steps. So quickly sow and grow your own delicious cauliflower in your vegetable garden!

Cauliflower: what is it?

Cauliflower is a member of the Brassica family, which also includes broccoli, cabbage and kale, and is a vegetable to grow in the “cool” season. It is a vegetable that is flexible and nutritious in any diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Cauliflower is especially high in vitamin C and low in calories. The distinctive white head of cauliflower is surrounded by firm, lush green leaves. The head, also called curd, is the edible part of the plant and can be used raw, boiled or baked for an awful lot of dishes. Consider stews, stir-fries, soups and stews. There are several varieties of cauliflower, including white, orange, green, such as this Romanesco Natalino, and purple, each with a distinctive flavor and nutritional profile.

The best time to sow cauliflower

But, how do you grow cauliflower? As mentioned, it is a vegetable to sow in the cold season. In fact, you can start pre-sowing (early) cauliflower as early as February. In May you can sow autumn cauliflower in the open ground of your vegetable garden, and June you can sow winter cauliflower in the open ground.

Cauliflower sowing and growing in brief

Use a propagator or choose a good location in the vegetable garden. Cauliflower likes airy soil and full sun or partial shade.

Soil preparation and fertilization

Prepare the soil in your vegetable garden properly. Wind it loose and enrich it with good manure such as this worm manure from Franky’s Flora.

Sow your seeds 0.5 to 1 cm deep and about 5 to 10 centimeters apart and cover with soil. Water them well.

Growth and care of cauliflower

Once the seeds have germinated and they are strong enough (about 5 cm tall), you can transplant them further apart. Then be sure to keep more than 30 cm between plants.

Water the cauliflower plants regularly, but make sure it doesn’t become a water fest.

Give them good nutrition such as this Kitchen Garden Food from ECOstyle.

Cauliflower diseases and prevention

Pay attention to the health of your plants and be alert for diseases in cauliflower, such as clubfoot and cabbage fly. Take preventive measures, such as using insect netting and crop rotation.

Harvesting cauliflower

Once the heads are firm and compact, and about 10 to 30 cm wide (depending on the variety) you can harvest the cauliflower.

Enjoy cauliflower all year round

Cauliflower takes about 75 to 100 days to grow. Do you sow summer, fall and winter cauliflower? Then you will have deliciously fresh cauliflower from your own vegetable garden all year round!
