Sowing and growing white cabbage
White cabbage is a great addition to your vegetable garden. If you want to sow white cabbage, you need a number of things and steps to make sure you get the best possible harvest. We explain here what you need and what to do for it.
White cabbage is a vegetable that grows best in the “cool” season and is part of the “Brassicaceae” family, also called “cruciferous. This includes other types of cabbage such as red cabbage and pointed cabbage, as well as vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.
What is white cabbage?
White cabbage is a popular crop for fall and early winter harvests because it is a hearty vegetable that can withstand cold temperatures and frost. The plant produces a tight, dense head, or “cabbage,” consisting of thick, wrinkled leaves that can weigh between one and eight pounds. The head is normally globular or slightly flattened and the leaves are often light green to white in color.
Because white cabbage is low in calories and rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin B6, as well as dietary fiber, it is a tremendously nutritious vegetable. It can be eaten raw, cooked in many different ways, or fermented to make sauerkraut.
How do you grow white cabbage?
When the seedlings are strong enough to transplant, they are moved from the seedbed or greenhouse to the field or garden to develop the white cabbage. To encourage healthy growth, cabbage needs regular water and fertilizer. It thrives best in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. With rows 60 to 90 centimeters apart, plants should be spaced about 45 to 60 centimeters apart. Because cabbage likes milder temperatures, it is best planted in early spring or late summer. Cabbage can be grown in full sun or light shade.
When the head is fully developed and firm to the touch, the white cabbage can be harvested. The head should be firm for its size and the outer leaves should be close together. Without damaging the stem or any of the surrounding leaves, carefully cut the head off the stem.
Sowing white cabbage in brief
- Choose a suitable location in your vegetable garden where you want to place the white cabbage when you transplant them. The vegetable should be well drained.
- Sow your white cabbage seeds inside seed trays in a propagator about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost.
- Close the growing container and place it in a warm, bright place such as a windowsill.
- Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- When the seedlings are large and strong enough to transplant, transplant them into p9 pots and place them in front of windows or in a greenhouse.
- After icing saints, when there is almost no chance of frost, you can transplant them outside.
- Water them regularly and give them good plant food.
- Be sure to keep watching for pests and diseases. Caterpillars and lice may be especially prevalent.
Depending on the variety and weather, white cabbage grows into a full-fledged white cabbage that can be harvested in 60 to 100 days!
