Butternut squash, also known as Butternut squash, is an annual, strong-growing plant with creeping shoots. The large pumpkins resemble a bell with an elongated top. Under the thick skin is firm, fibrous and aromatic flesh, perfect for canning. Pumpkin is a genus of annual plants in the Cucurbitaceae family, cultivated in South America since before our era. It came to Europe in the sixteenth century from Texas, where it was initially cultivated. Today, it is widely grown on all continents.
Using pumpkin
This butternut squash is perfect for canning because of its highly aromatic, firm flesh. At the same time, the fruits are very decorative. Its sweet, creamy, fiber-free flesh makes it perfect for all kinds of dishes – from soups and stews to breads, cakes and other pies.
Pumpkin can be either baked or steamed, although it takes on a specific sweet, buttery flavor during baking, as opposed to steaming.
Because of the pumpkin’s shape and smooth skin, it does not produce as much waste during cooking as other pumpkins. However, this pumpkin requires a special way of carving.
Sowing and harvesting butternut squash
Begin nwith sowing in pots indoors, or under shelter in the second half of April, while direct in soil can be done in the first half of May. Place the seeds in your vegetable garden at a depth of 3 to 4 cm. Germination can take up to 2 weeks. Seedlings should be planted in the ground in the second half of May if you started indoors, at a distance of 1×1 m. Harvesting should be done before the first night frost. It requires permeable, fertile, warm and moderately moist soil and a sunny spot in the vegetable garden.
