These leek seeds produce a late leek variety: Leek Blue Green Winter, Alaska type (Allium porrum), and is recommended for long-term storage and direct consumption. Leeks develop snow-white stems from which emerge a panicle of fine, blue-green leaves. Leeks are a low-calorie vegetable most commonly used to flavor soups or used in wok dishes. Moreover, you can make an aromatic, artistic salad out of it. Leeks are a vegetable with cleansing and slimming properties. It also contains many minerals, including potassium, sulfur, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, iron, copper, zinc and manganese, as well as vitamins C, B1 and B2. Nicotinic acid, which has anti-clotting properties, is also present in leeks.
Blue-green Winter Alaska can be precultured indoors, or sown directly in the vegetable garden. In the first half of April, seeds are sown the in the ground. Leek seeds are sown in boxes and pots filled with plain soil and peat, or in a heated propagator when grown at home between the months of February and April (for fall harvest) or in July (for spring harvest). Planting seedlings from spring sowing takes place in May to June, and planting seedlings from July sowing takes place around the transition of August and September. From September through November, leeks sown directly and spring seedlings are available for harvest. From April to mid-May the following year, leeks are harvested from summer seedlings after spending the winter underground. The optimum soils for leek cultivation are those that are fertile, high humus content, compact, moderately moist, sandy loamy and pH neutral. (pH 6-7.5). A sunny location in your vegetable garden is ideal for growing.
