This garlic chives seed produces a perennial from the Alliaceae family. It is locally referred to by many other names, including Chinese chives, bulb chives, Chinese garlic and oriental garlic. It comes from China, where it is a common and widely consumed vegetable. It is steadily gaining popularity in the Netherlands Although garlic chives are grown as vegetables, their beautiful blossoms also give them a decorative addition to your vegetable garden. Perfect for pot growing on balconies, terraces, as well as in your vegetable garden. It combines the flavors of chives and garlic with the therapeutic benefits of each. Throughout the year, these garlic chives can be collected and substituted for common chives in recipes.

Feature

This vegetable grows in bunches that remain for several years. Spinning bulbs produce triangular leaves in spring. The intensely green plants can grow up to 40 cm tall. In summer, long flowering branches develop foliage with loose flowers 5 cm in diameter. Chives are often grown as ornamental plants because of their beautiful, fragrant white blossoms. Flowers can be made from both dry bouquets and cut flowers. It produces many seeds, and in the spring many of those seeds begin to germinate. To prevent weed invasion and spontaneous seed dispersal, it is advisable to remove spent blossoms.

Features

Because of their nutritional richness and flavor, garlic chives are a very valuable food. It has more vitamin C than regular chives and is a fantastic source of macro- and micronutrients. Heart-healthy, antibacterial, strengthening and anti-emetic effects are present in all parts of the plant and digestion is also improved. Both leaves and blossom shoots can be made into vegetables or spices. The leaves, which resemble chives, smell like garlic. They are added fresh as a garnish to soups, cottage cheese, meat dishes and salads. For direct intake, it is recommended to choose young, single leaves or cut whole bunches. They can also be stored in the refrigerator for about a week and used as needed.

Cultivation

Almost any environment is favorable for garlic chives to grow. Although it has modest soil requirements, it thrives on fertile, wet, sandy clay soils with a pH close to neutral. It grows best in areas that are sunny to lightly shaded. It can be grown in our country under our climatic conditions and is resistant to frost, temperature drops down to -40°C and strong winds.

The location must be carefully prepared, as this vegetable can thrive in the same spot for years. It is recommended to add manure or compost to the soil before sowing or planting. It is crucial to systematically remove weeds and loosen the soil around the bushes during the next crop. Cutting chives often and close to the ground stimulates growth and thickens the bushes, but then the plants need feeding. A few days before harvest, plants can be bleached for a milder flavor by covering them with black film.

Multiplication

You can grow garlic chives from seeds or by splitting off existing bushes. For sowing, either a, pot seedbed or full ground can be used. Sow seeds directly into the soil in early April, spaced 30 × 20 cm apart in rows. Sow seeds in early April in pots placed in a warm environment to prepare seedlings. When the plants have three leaves, the seedlings are moved to a permanent location. Plants yield little the first year; the real yield does not begin until the second year, when the bushes have grown sufficiently. In addition, garlic chives can be effectively planted in pots and grown on balconies and windowsills. Cut larger, healthy bushes in the fall to create several smaller plants. It is best to feed the plants with compost or manure before transplanting. Every three to four years we divide the groves to revitalize the plants and encourage lush growth.
