What is irrigation? Many people know what it is, but not directly how to apply it in the vegetable garden. In fact, there are several types of irrigation systems. Consider drip irrigation, irrigation pots or solar-powered irrigation. These are a few options out there for your vegetable garden, and we highlight a few in this article that you can use perfectly to irrigate your own vegetable garden!
What exactly is irrigation?
Irrigation is the artificial watering of land when there is insufficient rainfall. Watering your vegetable garden with a garden hose is also a form of irrigation, since irrigating really just means “to provide with water.” Gardeners, farmers, orchardists and vineyard owners apply water at appropriate times through large-scale irrigation. This promotes plant growth and yields superior crops.
For individuals with vegetable gardens, it is often not possible, or affordable, to have large-scale irrigation constructed. And let’s face it, why should you?
There are some good irrigation options for your vegetable garden that are affordable and also very effective!
Drip irrigation
A good option for vegetable gardeners is drip irrigation. With drip irrigation, you lay a hose with drippers through your vegetable garden, seedbeds or pots. This hose connects to a water source such as your outdoor faucet or water tank, or such as a rain barrel, water tank or other source of water.
Once you open the water source, it waters all the plants where the drippers are placed. This effective way to irrigate your plants is popular because it is also a very affordable way of watering your plants “in bulk.

Irrigation systems
There are also some more sophisticated ways of irrigating. For example, there are systems that have a water tank and pots, such as the AutoPot Easy2Grow system. This system has a mechanism where the pots are in a reservoir connected by hoses to the water tank. The reservoir has a mechanism whereby only the ideal amount of water is let through from the water tank when she plant requests it. This way, your plant will have exactly what it needs and you yourself will only have to supply the water tank with water and plant food.
People with a vegetable garden who still like to go away for the weekend will not have to worry about the plants this way since they are automatically watered with the right amount.
Irrigation on solar energy
This type of irrigation is often a variation of drip irrigation. In this case, the hose is attached to an electric pump that uses solar energy, such as this Esotec solar irrigation system, to water the plants.
One advantage of this type of system is that it often has some form of timer on it. This allows you to accurately water all plants in the vegetable garden or seedbed. Other benefits include:
- Multiple water drop points
- Improved and/or adjustable flow rate
- Energy efficient
- Irrigation time adjustable
All this together makes this a good option for your vegetable garden if you don’t want to have to worry about it too much.
Self-watering pots
Another option is a more closed irrigation system such as this self-watering pot from Garland, for example. This allows you to perfectly grow vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes and peppers. Pots like this one have a water reservoir so you don’t have to water every day. Handy if you’re going away for the weekend. This pot from Garland is also convenient because it provides support for the plants. Use these types of systems to make your life just a little easier. Also very handy for your balcony, for example.
