These rhubarb seeds produce the species of rhubarb ‘Lider’. It is native to parts of Bulgaria, central Asia and southern Siberia. The leaf stalks of rhubarb are the only edible parts. They contain numerous beneficial minerals, including potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, phosphorus, B vitamins, vitamin C and beta-carotene. Moreover, it is low in calories – only 16 calories per 100 grams. Rhubarb has several uses, including making delicious jams and jellies, a cool drink and pastries. Rhubarb should not be served too often or in excessive amounts due to the fact that it contains oxalic acid.

This rhubarb can withstand cold temperatures and the harshest winters without protection in your vegetable garden. It needs a lot of water in the soil to grow, tolerates shade perfectly, but is more likely to produce in full sun. It thrives in nutrient-rich, humus-rich soils. Rhubarb can be propagated by sowing or by dividing the rootstock. Rhubarb plants are harvested three times over the course of three weeks in the second year after planting, increasing yields.

Seeding

Sow rhubarb in pots or in a seedbed in spring. Remove any flower stems that emerge in the summer.

Planting out

Location

Requires good, moist soils and generous fertilization for outdoor cultivation.

Fruit shape

Fleshy petioles rich in minerals and vitamins C and A.
