Cherokee Purple is the name of an ancient tomato variety that develops a fruit with a deep, dusky pink color, while at the stem it retains a slightly greenish hue when ripe for eating. Its deep crimson interior and bright skin combination give it its distinctive color. It was one of the first of the darker color group of tomatoes sometimes described as “blacks.

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange was the first seed company to offer Cherokee Purple, which was released in limited quantity in 1993. The Cherokee Purple has become a popular “heirloom” variety.

Cherokee Purple tomatoes are “stick tomatoes. They are also notable for their dense, juicy texture, with tiny seed cells irregularly scattered through the flesh. The relatively dark interior color is enhanced by the seeds’ tendency to be surrounded by green gel. In 1995, a skin color mutation of Cherokee Purple emerged in Craig LeHoullier’s garden in North Carolina. It was called Cherokee Chocolate, and the yellow skin gives the variety a brownish mahogany hue.

The Cherokee Purple tomato is most available in summer and fall. This tomato is most delicious fresh and is often used in BLT sandwiches and salads. The Cherokee Purple can also be used in making pizza and pasta sauces.

Cherokee Purple seeds

These Cherokee Purple seeds come from selected growers who carefully isolate and dry their tomato seeds from their strongest plants. As a result, the risk of disease is zero, and our seeds deliver great germination. As soon as the tomato seeds begin to germinate, it’s advisable to use a LED grow light, as young plants require plenty of light to grow strong and healthy. During this early phase, it is recommended to keep the light on for 12 to 16 hours a day.

Organic tomato seeds

Our Cherokee Purple tomato seeds come from an Ethno botanist. Ethnobotany is the study of the relationship between humans and plants. By taking this into account, the plants, and therefore tomato seeds, are grown strictly organically.
