Italian-born Romanesco cauliflower is a medium-early variety. It produces roses with conical flowers resembling turrets. The delicate, exquisite flavor of green cauliflower, which is not bitter and has a faint nutty aftertaste, makes it highly prized. Romanesco cauliflower is meant to be grown outdoors.
Cauliflower is not found in the want and is probably a combination of broccoli and cabbage. The name is a translation of the French expression for “cabbage bloom.” The minerals in cauliflower are truly a treasure trove for our bodies. The cauliflower rose is the part that can be eaten. Although white is the color we choose most often, other colors are also available, including green, purple and yellow. If we choose the right variety, cauliflowers can stay in the vegetable garden for a very long time and can be harvested from spring until November.
Growing Romanesco cauliflower
Cauliflower prefers humus-rich soils and a sunny, warm spot in the vegetable garden. Because of its shallow root system, it can only thrive in moist soils and will not grow well in sandy soils. It is important to feed it firmly. It is advisable to feed the soil with manure or compost the year before cultivation. Loosening the soil is also helpful because it makes the heads more compact.
Romanesco cauliflower seeds can be sown indoors in February and sown outdoors from March to mid-April. Plant in the ground in April or May at 40-50 x 50 cm intervals. We plant the seeds in July after sowing them in early May and June to bring in the harvest in the fall.
Application of Romanesco to cauliflower
The most common method of serving cauliflower is to steam it, which is the healthiest method, and then sprinkle it with breadcrumbs and butter. But it also works well in stews and salads. There are many soups that require cauliflower. You can also pickle it. It is an excellent addition to rice and pasta and can be incorporated into potato pancakes.
As you can see, cauliflower can be prepared in a variety of ways. Cauliflowers of various colors make wonderful decorations, both in the vegetable garden and on the plate. Along with other cabbage, it is a beneficial vegetable in a diet aimed at losing weight. It is minimal in calories and also contains many vitamins, magnesium and potassium.
