The two-year-old variety of kale known as “Halbhoher Grüner Krauser,” or Half-Height Green Krauser, (Brassica oleracea var. Sabellica) produces beautiful, light green cabbages. The plant grows about 90 cm tall. The leaves are long and slender, heavily corrugated and have a young grassy green hue. They have a light, refreshing taste.

Kale is ideal for decorating flower beds in your vegetable garden, these do not necessarily have to be flower beds for vegetables. It prefers sunny locations because the plant will do poorly in partial shade. It has low soil requirements and can thrive in sandy soils with a pH of about 7. Kale will wilt and become diseased in acidic, wet soil.

Especially among health food enthusiasts, kale is becoming increasingly popular. It is useful for making juices, smoothies and cleanses, in addition to being consumed directly in salads or other dishes. Protein, fiber and vitamins C, K and B are all abundant. Large amounts of zinc, magnesium, phosphorus and iron are present. Because of the significant amount of sulforaphane it contains, it also has antioxidant effects.

Moderate watering

The root system of Kale Halbhoher Gruner Krauser is robust and drought-resistant. Only young plants and those that do struggle with drought should be routinely irrigated. Apply diluted natural fertilizer several times during the season.

This kale variety is very resistant to frost, especially in open ground, Kale Halbhoher Gruner Krauser is absolutely frost resistant. Pots can freeze kale Halbhoher Gruner Krauser, so it is better to wait until November to eat it. The same ailments and pests afflict kale as other cabbages. Knotweed is a harmful kale disease, for example. The kale is not developing and the roots are beginning to thicken. Crop rotation is hampered by kale because cruciferous vegetables are grown on the same site only once every four years or less. Cabbage aphids and cabbage whites are pests that cause problems. Covering the kale tightly with agrotextile or a curtain with dense mesh will effectively protect it from it. Their entire perimeter MUST be covered with earth.

Vegetables such as kale can help prevent cancer (contains sulforaphane). Iron, calcium and vitamins are also in the composition. Kale has been grown in the Netherlands for many years. Although it ended up on tables, it was also used for pets and livestock as food. In addition, it was placed close to orchards to prevent hares from wintering in fruit trees.
